In every movie, comic or anime we have a villian or a antagonist. Like the heroes, these people also have a motivation that makes them do what they do. The difference is that sometimes they take their ideologies too far. Here I will just mention some villians and their motivations. After we read it, we might understand more about humans. Because after all, every story is inspired from human beings and their behaviour. The characters depicted are usually at two ends of the spectrum unlike us who can lie in the middle or side more towards one side. The most famous villians people know of are from either Batman or Spiderman rogues gallery. I will discuss more about the Batman villians.
Joker – Now you might think, how would joker be someone with whom we can sympathise? According to Killing Joke (A Batman graphic novel) Joker was initially a failed comedian before his transformation. He had a pregnant wife whom he loved alot and she loved him back. In order to make money he decided to help his friends who were crooks to steal from his former company “Ace Chemicals” Then he got a call that his wife had died in a freak accident (one in a million chances of happening) His crook friends still wanted him to go ahead with the plan and he did. There they were spotted by the security and his friends turned on him. But batman arrived and in an attempt to show that he was not a crook fell into a chemical vat. So imagine such a bad day
Mr Freeze has one of the most saddest origin stories. His wife was diagnosed with an incurable disease. So he froze her till he could find a cure. He started working secretly and started using company resources. He was found out and in an attempt to grab him he was doused by some chemicals there. He only steals so that he can fund his research to find a cure for his wife.
Poison Ivy, an eco terrorist, wants to save the plants. She doesn’t want to hurt humans unless they decide to harm nature. Two face, believing in the concept of fairness amd chance. He became so after acid was thrown in his face by a criminal in the court room. Ventriloquist, a person with dual personalities, He is a thug via a puppet and is otherwise timid. The latter can never be free from the first. In the episode “Double Talk” from Batman the animated series, you really understand the ordeal the person has to undergo. Ra’s al Ghul, who wants to purge the world of all corruption and evil at will go to any extant to achieve it.
These are just some of the villians in the batman rogues gallery. Another villian who I would like to speak about is Zaheer from The legend of Korra. He wanted chaos or rather he wanted no leaders. Just a simple rule by the people. In achieving so he did many things and tried assassinating world leaders. Another villian from the prequel series avatar the last airbender is Zuko. Banished by his father to find the avatar and never being the father figure in his life. After season 1, you can understand his inter struggle.
Animes has also similar characters. Tobi(from Naruto), wanted a world where he could meet his loved one. He was motivated on creating a perfect world. Gaara was always treated like a weapon and never considered as a real person. No one ever tried helping him as everyone was scared of him, just like killer croc from batman.
Maleficent is the perfect example for such stories. It gives a unique look on villians. No one is bad at their heart. Sometimes the people who are suffering have no outlet. Either they dont have the resources to change their life or they dont have a guiding light. Maybe we can help these people and make them better than who they are
